Texas Brownies  

2 cups flour 2 cups sugar
½ cup butter ½ cup shortening
1 cup strong brewed coffee ¼ cup dark ,cocoa
½ cup buttermilk 2 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. vanilla
chocolate frosting(recipe follows)

In large mixing bowl, combine the flour & sugar.
In heavy saucepan, combine butter , shortening, coffee & cocoa.
Stir & heat to boiling.
Pour boiling mixture over the flour & sugar in the bowl.
Add the buttermilk, eggs, baking soda & vanilla.
Mix well, using a wooden spoon, or high speed on electri mixer.
Pour into a well buttered 17½ x 11 inch jelly roll pan.
Bake at 400º for 20 minutes or until brownies test done in the center.
While brownies bake, prepare the frosting.


Frosting

½ cup butter 2 tbsp. dark cocoa
¼ cup milk 3 ½ cups unsifted confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

In a saucepan, combine butter, cocoa & milk.
Heat to boiling, stirring.
Mix in the confectioners sugar & vanilla. until frosting is smooth.
Pour warm frosting over brownies as soon as you take out of oven.
Cool. Makes 48 bars.
